Candlestick Basics Without Trading Jargon

Learn what open, high, low and close mean, and why one candle never tells the whole story.

Learn what open, high, low and close mean, and why one candle never tells the whole story.

What a candle records

A candlestick summarises four prices for a selected period: the open, high, low and close. The body shows the distance between open and close, while the wicks show the highest and lowest prices reached.

Read context, not shapes alone

A candle only describes what happened during one interval. Compare it with nearby candles, volume and relevant public information. A familiar-looking shape is not a prediction.

A simple practice exercise

Choose a historical daily chart. Label the four prices on three candles, describe only what is visible, and write down what the chart cannot explain.

Journal prompt

Write one fact you observed, one assumption you made and one question that remains unanswered.

Risk reminder

Markets are uncertain and investing can result in loss. Historical information does not guarantee a future outcome.
